BEXLEY THEATRE ARTS

Bexley City Schools Theatre Program

YouTheatre
YouTheatre is the Bexley Theatre Arts program designed for students in grades 1 through 5.  The purpose of YouTheatre is to learn, explore, and develop theatre fundamentals such as reading, movement, character analysis, voice, and group work through creative and fun learning atmospheres.  High School and Middle School students play a big role in YouTheatre activites, and they can help mentor younger students.

There are two YouTheatre events during each season:  the YouTheatre play for grades 3-5, and YouTheatre Drama Camps   for grades 1 and 2.

YouTheatre Play

The YouTheatre Play is for students in grades 3 through 5.  Students must memorize lines, be able to work well with their peers, take directions, maintain a positive, mature attitude during long rehearsals--especially when they aren't on stage, and they still have to act their parts.  But the experience is fun and rewarding, even though it is a big time commitment.

In order to create a more productive learning environment, this year the YouTheatre play is for grades 3 through 5 only.  By narrowing down the grades involved, the play will be much more grade specific and have a bigger impact on the students.

This year, the YouTheatre play is The Aliens are Coming! The Aliens are Coming!. Aliens enthusiasts are convening at The Meteorite Inn located near the secretive military base Area 502 in order to share abduction stories and search for signs of aliens.

Auditions for the YouTheatre play are held in the Cassingham Theatre.  In order to audition, students should memorize a short poem.  Students should try to use movement and voice in order to bring their poems to life.

YouTheatre Drama Camps

The YouTheatre play workshops this year have been revamped into a grade 1 and 2 rehearsal experience.  As there is no audition process, any student in grades 1 and 2 can be involved.  During the camps, students will be learning theatre basics as well as rehearsing for a performance of a play, performed on the final day of camp.

Through not having auditions and presenting theatre in a fun, learning environment, the goal of the theatre camp is to teach theatre basics while also helping shy students learn to express themselves.  Students will be given parts in the final performance due to their comfort levels.  Students will be asked to memorize some lines.

High School students will be on hand to help the 1st and 2nd graders grow.

This year, the drama camps will be held on Mondays-Thursdays from March 28th through April 13th.  The final performance will be on April 14th in the Studio Theater.
